Bert and Richard Visit the Majestic Sedona Red Rocks

Richard visits the majestic Sedona red rocks atop the 4000 feet plus mystic red rock mountain. While there, you can feel the high energy of these rocks, with the refreshing wind breeze that tempers the warm/hot Arizona summer, it feels relaxing. This setting is a good candidate to generate energy through solar and wind technology. There is good potential of renewable energy technology application on this exhilirating scenic spot.

Mr. Woolsey's keynote speech sets up the positive tone and strong challenge to all the conference delegation. In his message, there is no ifs and no buts about Energy, we have to respond and act in concrete terms to produce results on reduction, the revolutionized application of renewable energy technologies and avoid the complete dependence on fossil fuel. What the world needs now is the preservation of the earth where we live in and avoid the irreversible impact of global warming. We dont have the luxury of time to wait, the right time to act is now.

Meets Bert Saria at his Home in Avondale

After checking and picking up my entry badge at the Phoenix Convention Center West Building near the Symphony Hall on Saturday 2 Aug. Bert invited me to see their place in Avondale. It was a very nice place and have seen his Table Tennis Trophies from tournament in Pensacola and also Luisiana. We talked about his good old days in DGar. He also showed me the 2nd Place trophy way back in the late 80's when he lost to Rey Rios in the finals of the DG Open. But he's equally proud with the Doubles trophy he and Rey Rios won. His DG memories and trophies adorned his study room. All his children have settled in various part of the United States (New Jersey, Florida and in Arizona). He currently have 9 grandchildren.

RICHARD SORIANO VISITS ARIZONA

On his way to the GOVENERGY 2008 Conference at the Phoenix Convention Center on the weekend he visited the area, he managed to stop by the U. S Airways Center. He was accompanied by Mr. Bert Saria, a former Diego Garcia colleague and now a resident of Avondale, Arizona, to get around Scottsdale and Phoenix area. Bert also kindly came to meet Tiger at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It was a surprised change of space temperature for Tiger, since the dry hot summer temperature of was melting the mercury at 105-110 degree Fahrenheit. It's just like the air coming from a hair dryer. But anyway, this is tolerable as long as you don't stay on the outside too long. But may be once the body get acclimatized to this warm temperature then it is more bearable. Because of this temperature condition, Golf Green fees are surprisingly low compared to the usual more than $200 normal on Spring time. The rate now ranges between 21-75 dollars since the playing window is limited on early morning and late afternoon only. Not advisable to play on the midday if you have not acclimatize yet. About food, there are variety of restaurants from Seafood, Thai, Japanese, Italian, and of course the traditional entree of Mexican and Indian inlfuenced menu. Although the majority of the population are of Hispanic origin, there are also Mediterranean, Vietnamese and other Asian cuisine. Ok, this is all for now and more to come.

GLENN YOSHINAGA visited Coral Sands Golf Course and tried his new found “Axe Swing” to the test. He did some practice one afternoon last week at the driving range and felt the new swing is effective. On 22 June 08, that early Sunday morning, Glenn and Richard (the local Player), set for a first hour tee time at the Coral Sands. We left the Q’s before sunrise and the sky showing some sign of rain clouds, but of course, this did not deter the two golf hackers in making it to the course. At the range, Glenn got a bucket of dimpled balls to warm up that axe swing before we hit the first tee. The axe swing proved to be a more accurate and longer shot for Glenn. We finished the front nine with Glenn 1 shot ahead of T-Rich. On the back nine, Glenn made birdie on the first hole and greenie the last hole. We finished the round with no lost ball. After the round, we watched a few matches of the Ultimate Fighting Championship at the Clubhouse. We did not stay too long at the Clubhouse after the UFC, Glenn headed back to downtown while I attended Sunday mass at the Sacred Heart Chapel.
Some players at the Clubhouse are asking how that Axe swing going. Glenn will be demonstrating his new found swing to some local players this coming weekend before he goes back to Hawaii next month.

110th Philippine Independence Day Celebration

The Pinoys in this part of the world, have spent thousands fo hours preparing for the event to fully culminate on Saturday, 14 June 08, (Note: The celebration was move from 12 June 08, the actual date of the independenc e proclamation by the then President Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite, 110 years ago) this is to make way for other NOY-PIs and their friends to be able to celebrate freely this hard earned Inpedendence form the mapanakop na Kastila ng mga panahong iyon. But before this, there were many activities/events that had been completed or fulfilled. The Kabayan Night held at Filmau Club in April and the Canvassing for the search for Binibining Pilipinas DG 2008 held in May also at the FILMAU Club. A lot of prizes were given, to the lucky ticket holders of the raffle draw during the April and May event, worth more than $2000. Last night at the Island Room of the Turner Club, the final conclusion of the Pageantry earned a lot of positive praises from the guest, fellow Pinoys and also the Judges and Presentors of the Awards. KUDOS to the Committee and to all the Volunteers, Performers, Planners, Decorators and most of all the pageant night directors, scriptwriters and host. But don't forget the bartenders, waiters and the janitorials who keep the pageant fully hydrated and the Island room cleaned.

A lot of names to be thanked, but I would like to congratulate the winners of the pageant, The Binibining Pilipinas DG 2008 and her court (All seven of them; Jackie, Tess, Mylen, Mitch, Tina, Rachelle, and Sei).

See you on Friday, 13 June 08, also at the Island room, for the Cultural Night (8:00 P.M.) that will showcase the songs, dances, culture and traditions of the Filipino people to pre-highlight the parade, picnic and sports fest the following day. Mabuhay ang Sambayanang Pilipino. Maligayang Pagdiriwang at Mabuhay ang Kalayaan. God Bless all freedom loving citizens of the Philippines and of the World.

01 JUNE 08 MWR GOLF TOUR

About 50 golfers vied for the weekend tournament om 01 June 08. The weather was quite windy but it is not deterrent to the focus of the participants. This handicap net tournament had players posting net 4 under par 26 on the par 30 Coral Sands Golf Course. This was posted by Dr. Dalgetty from the Branch Health Clinic, thus earning the coveted Champions prize provide by NSF MWR. Another player, Mr. Dave Cruz, who is a regular weekend player of the GolF Club, earned a 2 under par 28, to claim 3rd place and the corresponding MWR prize. The best gross score for the day was at 4 over par 34, this was posted by another weekend player, they nicknamed TigerChamp, His name is yours truly, Recto "Richard" G. Soriano. Most of the players had played additional rounds after the tournament for their routine fun game and practice rounds. After walking the more than 200o yards of this 20 acre par 30, 9-hole course, and the best in this region, the players got together over a cup of coffee (surprisingly no ice cream in the clubhouse), a Mean Gene burger treats, and sipping of the Lapaz Batchoy Instant Mami imported from the Philippines.

In the coming weeks we are planning to have more games and invite mroe players to participate in different golf format such as, a modified stableford or a matchplay tournament. It could even be a brunch golf at the PK Inn. So watch out for some e-mails folks for this Saturday Brunch Golf. Keep swinging and conquer the links and get your first birdie, eagle or even a hole-in-one. Have a nice day. Your host, V/R, Tigerich

WEEKEND SPORTS

Last night we have a simple get together, the fishermen and golfer group prepared some drinks and pulutan seafood fried and soup plus the famous wings special. The group had to endure laughters and taste buds exercise trying to savor the sumptous kimchi prepared by Bongski. The drinks as usual is topped by the MIller Lite and followed by the export quality Philippine San Miguel gold. Don't forget, we had also the bottled water for those on therapy and those who rely on dilution prcoss to slow down the effect of party alcohol.
Well that was last night, this morning a bowling fun game was on the rocks for all the OG's sponsored by no other than Don Orlino Encarnacion (the famous ORLYNS team Manager) who will be retiring for good in the Zamabales area. He does not use tee on his sports, but he use his Hammer Bowling ball in making strikes. He was the longest serving Bowling League President in the island and also the most active and able supporter of the DODCEA and OCEA group. WE wish Don Orlino (Tito Orly to some) the best on the next Chapter of his life being, retired. I have witnessed most of his participation in the community and all were naturally sincere outstanding friendship bestowed to all. We wish you best Orly, GOD Bless, as they say in the navy, "Fairwinds and Following Seas". Have a safe and enjoyable trip back home. Mahalo.

Weekend Tour

Hello folks,

Played four rounds of golf this weekend with friends. Two rounds each on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was a good day for golfing, there was a moderate to gusting wind which tempered the heat of the tropical sun. The first round was good, I got a skin and on the second round got one skin too. Sunday, which was a MWR tournament, my game started with a good tee-shot and an approach shot for an eagle but the 3rd shot went pass the green and ended up a bogey due to poor putting. I finish the round on a bogey golf. This is not a winning score even for the last spot for a MWR gift certificate. The next round were better, scored a 3 over par but of course it is a best ball scramble. After the grueling aerobic walk on the course's fairways, we treat ourselves with a late lunz at the PK Inn for Sinigang, Caldereta and CPA (Chicken Pork Adobo). Glenn, Dave tried their luck on the one-arm bandit but not so lucky. We'll try again this weekend. Ok folks, keep practicing your short game. Dave and Glenn, by the way, made even par on their best ball round. Tonight another golf colleague will arrrive on-island after a full month of Philippine family and golf vacation. Ok Ciao! V/R, Tigerich

MYFIRSTBLOG

HELLO FELLOW WHITE DIMPLED BALL HACKERS. i CREATED THIS BLOG TO SHARE WITH MY OWN GOLF EXPERIENCES AND ALSO TO LEARN FROM YOUR PURSUIT OF THIS GAME.

STARTED CONTEMPLATING TO PLAY GOLF IN 95 BUT I DID NOT HIT A REAL GOLF BALL UNTIL 96 AND ACTUALLY WALK ON THE FAIRWAY IN 97. SINCE THEN I GOT HOOK ON THIS WONDERFUL GAME. I ALMOST QUIT AT THE BEGINNING, COZ IT'S SO HARD TO MAKE THAT WHITE BALL AIRBORNE AND DIRECT TO WHERE YOU THINK YOU WANT IT. bUT WITH PERSISTENT TIME AT THE RANGE FOR TWO YEARS THEN I FINALLY CROSSOVER WITH THE FULL USE OF THE CLUBS IN MY BAG, THOUGH IT'S STILL TOUGH TO USE THE DRIVER. I STILL ENJOY THE UPS AND DOWNS OF MY LONG AND SHORT GAME, BUT WHAT COUNTS MOST IS YOUR WALK WITH NATURE AND THE LAUGHTERS THAT COMES DURINGA ROUND. SO HOW ABOUT YOU FOLKS, HOW DID YOU START? PLEASE SHARE YOUR ESCAPADES AND LET THIS BE THE START OF A HONEST SHARING FOR THIS HEALTHFUL EXERCISE OF WALKING THE FAIRWAYS.
